Shipping-line promotions: the discount that is not a code
Start from what you are shipping, not from the discount
Four chips, four different questions. Each one links to the same estimator so the comparison is done on real inputs rather than on remembered numbers.
Shipping promotions are scoped to a route, a weight band and often a destination. That means a promotion can be perfectly real and still inapplicable to the parcel in front of you — which is why the first move is to describe the parcel rather than to find the promotion.
The five things that decide what a route costs
Every serious dispute about shipping comes down to one of these five being different between the two quotes.
- Billable weight
- Lines charge the larger of actual and volumetric weight, so a bulky light parcel is charged on its dimensions.Where to look: Run the dimensions through the volumetric calculator before comparing anything.
- The divisor in use
- 5,000, 6,000, 8,000 and 12,000 are all in service, and the divisor alone can change billable weight by more than a third.Where to look: The line's own documentation. Never assume the divisor you saw on a different line.
- Weight band boundaries
- Rates step rather than scale, so 480 g and 520 g can sit in different bands and a 20 g difference becomes a real cost.Where to look: The rate table on the line you are quoting.
- Consolidation
- Two orders merged into one parcel pay one minimum charge. This is usually the largest saving available and involves no promotion at all.Where to look: The parcel submission screen, before you pay for the second shipment.
- Destination handling
- Remote-area surcharges and customs handling are added outside the headline rate, and they are not part of any promotion's scope.Where to look: The quote's own surcharge list, and the destination's import rules.
The practical consequence: a 20% shipping promotion on the wrong route can cost more than no promotion on the right one. Compare two complete landed totals before you look for a discount.
Compare four route shapes against one parcel
Enter the parcel once and read four rows. The rate shapes below are illustrative — they exist so you can see how the structure behaves, not so you can quote a price. Your own line's numbers belong in the fields.

Shipping promotion questions
Five questions, in the order they arrive once someone has actually compared two routes.
Why is the promotional rate still more expensive than the standard one I saw last month?
Does a shipping discount stack with a coupon code?
Is it worth splitting a parcel to hit a cheaper band?
How much does the box add?
Where do customs and duty sit in all this?
Quote two real lines instead of chasing a code
The index runs its own shipping estimator and volumetric calculator. Putting your parcel through both takes longer than reading a promotion banner and gives you a number you can act on.
